Where settings live

  • My profile: native language, birthday, username, public profile.
  • My learning: teaching voice, session settings.
  • My account: subscription and billing, emails, notifications, voice recordings, closing your account.

On the webOn the website: “Settings” in the sidebar. Dark mode is switched from the sidebar and follows your device by default.

In the appIn the app: the Settings tab, on a single page. Dark mode follows your phone.

Languages

Two separate settings: the app language and your native language. The language you learn is always Japanese.

  • App language: menus and instructions, in English, Français, Español, Bahasa Indonesia, Tiếng Việt, 한국어 or 日本語.
  • Native language: the one used for translations and definitions. Settings, My profile, “Edit”, then “Save”.

On the webOn the website, pick the app language in the sidebar under “App language”.

In the appIn the app, the “Phone language” option follows your device.

Photo, name and voice

  • Profile photo: JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 5 MB.
  • Username: can be changed only once.
  • Teaching voice: play the “Samples”, then tap “Use this voice”. It reads examples, listening exercises and prompts. It does not change how your pronunciation is scored.

Reminders and notifications

Everything is set in “Email and notification preferences”. Every option starts switched on.

  • Daily reminder: only on days without study, at the time you choose (5 pm by default, in your time zone).
  • A study recap each evening you studied, new follower alerts, friends’ activity on Sunday evening, end of a study break.
  • Nudges after 7, 30 and 90 days without study, one per step.
  • Every study and activity email has a one-click unsubscribe link. Security, account and billing emails are always sent. Promotional emails are never sent without your consent.

On the webOn the website: “Turn on notifications” to get alerts on this computer (new follower, study time, end of a break, morning quest). Turn it on in each browser.

In the appIn the app: “Remind me to study” is off until you turn it on. It then sends a reminder at the same time as the email, plus reminders 30 days, 7 days and 1 day before your exam. Everything stays on the phone.

Voice recordings

Speaking exercises need your consent, given once.

  • Before the first speaking exercise: “Allow and continue” or “Don’t allow”.
  • Your voice is recorded only while the button is in use. It is scored automatically, then deleted.
  • It is never used to identify anyone or to train models.
  • If you refuse, speaking exercises and the voice step of the placement test are unavailable. “Review my choice” lets you change your mind any time.

Signing in and passwords

  1. Forgot your password: tap “Forgot password?” and enter your email.
  2. Open the link in the email; it works for 1 hour.
  3. Type the new password twice, then tap “Update password”.
  • After a password change, your other devices are signed out.
  • Too many sign-in attempts: wait a few minutes.
  • To sign out: “Sign out” in the website sidebar, or the button at the bottom of the app’s Settings tab.

In the appIn the app, you request the reset from the phone, and choose the new password on the website through the emailed link.

Google, LINE or Discord: when sign-in fails

On the website, you can sign up and sign in with Google, LINE or Discord. The service you pick shares your email address, and that address identifies your account.

  • “Sign-in was cancelled”: the service’s window was closed or access was declined. Just try again.
  • “We couldn’t complete the sign-in with that provider”: try again a little later. If it keeps happening, write to support.
  • “This provider didn’t share an email address”: an address is needed to create the account. Sign up with your email address, or pick another service.
  • “An account already uses this email address”: sign in with the method you used originally, for example your email and password. If that isn’t possible, write to support.
  • No longer able to use your Google, LINE or Discord account: write to support from the contact page, giving your Aaronsan account’s email address.

In the appThe app signs in with email and password; Google, LINE and Discord are offered on the website only.

Devices and sessions

“Devices and sessions” lists every device where your account is signed in. The one in your hands is marked “This device”.

  • “Sign out this device” signs out another device; “Sign out all other devices” keeps only the one you are using.
  • A signed-out device loses access on its next action, within a few minutes at most, and has to sign in again.
  • Free account: no device limit. Premium: 3 devices signed in at the same time.
  • With Premium, signing in on one more device still works: the least recently used other device is signed out automatically, and a notice appears on the website and in the app, along with an email.
  • Each browser and the app count separately: the website and the app on the same phone are two devices.
  • “Email me about new sign-ins”, on from the start: an email for each sign-in from an unknown device, and whenever the limit signs a device out.

On the webOn the website: Settings, My account, “Devices and sessions”, with the email option right below.

In the appIn the app: the Settings tab, “Devices and sessions” card; the email option sits in “Email and notification preferences”.

  • Website only: sign-in with another service, a dark mode switch, computer notifications, claiming a heart you receive, “My challenges”.
  • App only: the “Phone language” option, phone reminders with an exam countdown, native link sharing.
  • Legal pages open on the website; the contact form is built into the app.
