Chapter 4

Practice tools

Kana, kanji writing, speaking, listening, the dictionary and free practice.

Characters (kana)

The Characters page shows hiragana and katakana, with the sound of each one.

  • “Listen”: tap a card to hear it.
  • “Write”: tap a character to trace it. Free and unlimited.
  • A kana is mastered in writing after 3 clean traces.
  • Sections follow how Japanese works: basic characters, dakuon, combinations, small tsu, long vowels.

Kanji writing

Every kanji you write joins your collection. Three clean runs and it turns gold.

  1. Open “Kanji writing”, or “Write these kanji” on a kanji step of your path.
  2. Choose “Trace” to follow the highlighted stroke, or “From memory” to write the whole kanji before it is checked.
  3. Draw the strokes in order. “Show the stroke” helps when you are unsure.
  • A run counts when it has no mistakes and no hints.
  • +2 EXP per character done right, once per character per day.
  • Free: 5 different kanji a day, unlimited tries on each. Those from your path count too. Premium: unlimited.
  • Writing stays open during a study break.

Pronunciation

Say a word into the microphone and get a score out of 100.

  1. Tap the microphone, say the word, then tap again.
  2. Read your score: 70 to pass, 85 and up for “Excellent!”.
  3. Compare what was expected with what was heard, then “Try again” if needed.
  • The breakdown shows accuracy, fluency and completeness.
  • Voice recordings must be allowed (see the Account chapter).

On the webOn a computer, Space starts and stops recording. If the microphone is blocked, allow it from the browser’s lock icon.

In the appIf the microphone is blocked, allow it in your phone’s settings.

Shadowing

Repeat a sentence right after hearing it, for rhythm and intonation.

  1. Tap “Play reference”.
  2. Repeat it aloud, copying the rhythm and intonation.
  3. Say how it went: Again, Hard, Good or Easy.
  • +2 EXP per attempt of at least 3 seconds.
  • A shadowing session counts for your daily streak.

Passive listening

Let Japanese tracks play while you do something else.

  • Previous and next track, pause, loop playback.
  • +10 EXP for listening at least 60 seconds, once per deck per day.
  • Passive listening counts for your daily streak.

The dictionary

Look up a word, a kanji or a grammar point, in Japanese or in your own language.

  1. Type kanji, kana, romaji or a meaning.
  2. Run the search with Enter or “Search”.
  3. Open a result: reading, strokes, level, example, on and kun readings, the deck that teaches it, and audio.
  • Free: vocabulary, kanji and grammar. Premium: the full dictionary, every level.
  • An entry from a Premium level shows as locked without a subscription.

My lessons and free practice

Every deck you have studied stays available, like the slides of a past class.

  • Each deck shows cards seen, cards mastered, accuracy and number of sessions.
  • “Practice” replays a deck without changing your review schedule.
  • Free: 5 practice sessions a day. Premium: unlimited.
  • “My words” gathers every word you have met, with a search.

Favorites

  1. After answering, tap “Save”.
  2. Find the card in “My favorites”, filtered by type or by deck.
  3. “Study this deck” takes you back to its deck; “Remove from favorites” removes the card.
