Chapter 2

Your JLPT path

The five levels, the path map and how to pass a level.

The five levels

The JLPT runs from N5, the easiest, to N1, the most advanced.

  • N5: the basics.
  • N4: everyday life.
  • N3: independence.
  • N2: professional.
  • N1: nuance.

The path map

“My path” on the dashboard draws the road to your target level.

  • Decks follow the order hiragana, katakana, kanji, vocabulary, grammar, phrases.
  • They are grouped in units of 8 decks.
  • A star marks the decks in today’s session.
  • Each level ends with its mock exam.
  • A token shows your current step; “My step” brings the map back to it.
  • Tap any step to open its panel: start or continue, review a finished deck, or see the access options.
  1. Tap the current step.
  2. Choose “Start here” or “Continue here”.

Completed or mastered?

Two different milestones, shown on every deck.

  • Completed: every card in the deck has been seen at least once.
  • Mastered: every card is stable, which means its next review is 21 days or more away.
  • A locked deck needs Premium.

Celebrations

Big moments get their own scene.

  • Deck mastered: every card of the deck has reached stable recall.
  • Level complete: every learning item of the level is mastered.
  • Level passed: on the path, your token crosses into the next level.

Passing a level

You earn a level when three conditions are met at the same time.

  • Coverage: enough of the level’s vocabulary, kanji and grammar is stable, with no content type far behind the others.
  • Retention: enough of the cards you studied stayed stable. It is measured once you have studied 50 cards, with only a few cards forgotten 4 times or more.
  • Exam: at least one mock exam of that level passed.

On the webOn the website: the “My JLPT progress” tab at the top of the dashboard and the Learn page.

In the appIn the app: the progress screen, opened from the JLPT progress row on Home.

My stats

One page gathers your numbers: JLPT levels, activity, memory, skills, mock exams, specializations, rewards and study languages.

  1. On the dashboard, tap “See my stats”.
  2. Pick a period: 7 d, 30 d, 1 yr or All.
  • Every number comes from your own study; nothing is shown to other members.

Specializations

Field-specific vocabulary by domain, included in Premium.

  • From N3: caregiving, hospitality, industry, agriculture, administration.
  • From N2: business, medical, IT.
  • At N1: academic.
  1. Open Learn, then the Level filter.
  2. Choose “Specializations”, then a domain.
