Getting started

Create your account, set your goal and find your way around.

Aaronsan in short

Aaronsan gets you ready for the JLPT, the official Japanese exam, from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced). Every day the app picks what to review and when each card comes back.

  • One account for the web, iPhone and Android: your progress follows you everywhere.
  • All of N5 is free, with no time limit.
  • Aaronsan works alongside a Japanese course; it does not replace one.
  • Aaronsan is not affiliated with the JLPT organisers and cannot guarantee a result.

Create your account

An account keeps your review schedule and progress on every device.

  1. Tap “Sign up” at the top of the page.
  2. Enter an email address and a password of 8 to 128 characters.
  3. Tap “Sign up” under the form.
  4. Type the 6-digit code from the email, then tap “Verify my email”.

On the webOn the website, a “Continue with…” button also lets you sign up with another service when it is offered.

In the appIn the app, you sign up with an email and a password.

Your first setup

On your first visit, two questions are enough.

  1. Pick a username: 3 to 30 characters, lowercase a–z and digits.
  2. Pick your native language: translations and definitions appear in it.
  3. Tap “Start learning”.

On the webOn the website, this form appears the first time you open the dashboard.

In the appIn the app, it appears right after sign-up.

Set your goal

Up to five short questions, one per screen, set up your daily session.

  1. Say what you already know, from “I’m new to Japanese” to “I can discuss many topics in depth”.
  2. Pick your target JLPT level. The app suggests one from your previous answer.
  3. Pick one of the next four exam sessions. The JLPT takes place on the first Sunday of July and December.
  4. Choose your daily study time: 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes.
  5. Choose “Start with the basics” or “Find my level”. Complete beginners go straight into a first kana session.

The placement test

It is optional and skips what you already know. It takes about two minutes.

  1. Tick what you already know: kana, N5 or N4 vocabulary, kanji or grammar, or reading at N3 and above.
  2. For each ticked item, 5 real cards appear: answer “I know” or “I don’t know”.
  3. 4 known cards out of 5 confirm the skill.
  4. If voice recordings are allowed, read 3 sentences aloud.

Finding your way

The dashboard sums up your day: today’s session, streak, counters, quests and your path.

  • The Learn page holds today’s session and every deck.
  • The other tools are one tap away: mock exam, dictionary, characters, kanji writing, my lessons, favorites, quests, Konbini and profile.

On the webOn the website, the sidebar lists every page: Dashboard, Learn, My lessons, Characters, Kanji writing, Mock exam, Dictionary, My favorites, Quests, Konbini, My profile, My stats, Settings, Subscription & Billing and Guide. On a small screen, a bottom bar gives Home, Learn, Exam, Dictionary and Settings.

In the appIn the app, there are three tabs: Home, Learn and Settings. Other pages open from the tiles on Home and the shortcuts in Settings.
